Our first symposium started a conversation — if we equip practitioners with scholarly research, can they put insights intocpractice to improve oversight in state legislatures? This year, we worked on building and strengthening partnerships between these two important communities. At next year’s symposium, we’ll take the next step:
How can legislators and academics collaborate to advance oversight practices in state legislatures and further scholarly research in the field?
Like our previous symposiums, we will call for scholars and graduate students to submit working papers on state legislative oversight and related topics to be read and reviewed by practitioners. We will also have roundtable discussions focused on overcoming barriers and leveraging opportunities for collaboration between scholars and practitioners. And, of course, there will be opportunities to get to know each other better in socia loutings, a reception, and more!
We will also recognize our 2025 Oversight Leader at the symposium. The SOA Oversight Leaders designation recognizes individual state legislators and committees whose work contributes to the practice of high-quality oversight and stands as an example for others to follow. Nominations are open now!
